What does a General Contractor’s Insurance policy cover?

Whether you are the General contractor or independent contractor which means a subcontractor, insurance in New Jersey can become confusing.   We write insurance for single subcontractors to larger contractors with multiple employees and subcontractors.

General Liability insurance provides coverage for bodily injury, property damage, legal costs, judgments and personal injury claims such as libel and slander.

Many contractors are not aware that general liability specifically excludes damage to their property, product or work. As with all insurance policies, there are many exclusions. Some of which can be really important to a contractor.

General Liability insurance which is usually the first coverage that a contractor is in need of. But General liability policies are far from “basic”.  There are many endorsements which may be needed for specific jobs, which often contractors need in order to be accepted on a job. Specific indemnification requirements, as well as additional insured endorsements, are required by most contracts.

Types of coverage that contractors need to consider:

·         General Liability policy with a per project aggregate

·         Primary Non-contributory coverage

·         Builders Risk

·         Contractors Professional Liability

·         Equipment & Tool Coverage

·         Pollution coverage

·         Commercial Auto

·         Workers Compensation
